Spotted
The Crested Oropendola is a large and robust icterid, primarily glossy black with a chestnut rump, a pale yellowish bill, and bright yellow outer tail feathers. Males have a distinct, often inconspicuous, crest on the crown.
Where to spot
Widespread across Central and South America, from southern Mexico south to Argentina. Found in a variety of habitats, including humid forests, forest edges, clearings, and plantations, often near rivers.
How to spot
Look for large, dark birds in the canopy or flying over forest clearings. The pale bill and yellow outer tail feathers are good field marks. Listen for their distinctive, gurgling calls, often given with a bowing display.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most easily observed during the breeding season when they congregate in colonies to nest and are very vocal.

This species is famous for its elaborate, pendulous nests, which can be over a meter long and are woven from vines and plant fibers, often found hanging from tall trees in colonies.
