The Yellow-rumped Cacique is a common and conspicuous icterid, characterized by its glossy black plumage with a brilliant yellow rump and patches on the shoulders and undertail coverts. It also has distinctive pale blue eyes.
Where to spot
Widespread across much of tropical Central and South America, from Panama south to Bolivia and Brazil. Found in a variety of open to semi-open habitats, forest edges, clearings, and plantations.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black body with the prominent yellow rump. The pale blue eyes are also a good field mark. Listen for its varied, bubbling, gurgling, and whistled calls, often heard from their nesting trees.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most easily observed and heard during the breeding season when they gather in large, noisy nesting colonies.
