The Red-rumped Cacique is a medium-sized, glossy black icterid with a prominent, vibrant red rump and undertail coverts. It has a distinctive pale, pointed bill and pale blue eyes.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Amazon basin and northern South America, including Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, gallery forests, and forest edges, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black body with the unmistakable bright red rump and undertail. The pale bill and blue eyes are also good field marks. Listen for its varied, gurgling, and whistled calls.

Year-round resident. Most conspicuous during the breeding season (which varies regionally) when they form colonies and are highly vocal.
