The Black-backed Oropendola is a large, mostly black icterid with a yellowish bill and a bright yellow tail (excluding the central feathers). It is very similar to the Wagler's Oropendola but with a slightly different bill pattern and range.
Where to spot
Found in Central America, specifically in northern Colombia and parts of Panama. It prefers humid lowland forests, forest edges, and disturbed areas.
How to spot
Look for large, black birds with a yellow tail. Distinguish it from similar species by its bill coloration (entirely pale yellow or greenish-yellow, not two-toned) and geographic range. Listen for its complex gurgling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Observation is best during early mornings or late afternoons when they are most active, or during the breeding season when colonies are formed.
