The Chopi Blackbird is a large, entirely glossy black icterid with a relatively long tail and a robust bill. It is a common and conspicuous resident of open country across much of South America.
Where to spot
Widespread across much of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Inhabits open grasslands, savannas, agricultural fields, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its large size and entirely glossy black plumage, often foraging on the ground. Listen for its wide repertoire of harsh, buzzy, and squeaky calls, often given in chorus by flocks.

Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (varies regionally). Can be seen in large, noisy flocks outside of breeding.
