Spotted
The Coscoroba Swan is a distinctive and unique waterfowl species native to South America. It is notable for being the smallest of the swans and possessing a pure white plumage with a striking pink bill and feet.
Where to spot
Found in various wetland habitats across southern South America, including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and parts of Paraguay and southern Brazil. It prefers shallow lakes, lagoons, marshes, and slow-moving rivers.
How to spot
Look for its entirely white plumage, except for black tips on the outermost primary feathers which are only visible in flight. Its bright pink bill and pink legs are highly diagnostic. Pay attention to its unique, sometimes goose-like honking calls.
When to spot
Primarily a year-round resident throughout much of its range, though some populations undertake local or seasonal movements in response to water levels and food availability. Breeding typically occurs in spring/early summer.

Despite its common name and swan-like appearance, the Coscoroba Swan is genetically distinct from 'true' swans and is often considered a more primitive species, representing an ancient lineage within the Anatidae family.
