The Collared Plover is a small, distinctive shorebird found across much of Central and South America. It is characterized by its prominent black collar and pale plumage.
Where to spot
Widespread across Central and South America, inhabiting coastal beaches, estuaries, riverbanks, sandbars, and open grasslands.
How to spot
Look along any open, sandy, or muddy edges of water bodies, both fresh and saline. Its prominent black collar and brown cap are good identification marks.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round throughout its extensive resident range. Most active during daylight hours, often foraging at the water's edge.
This plover is remarkably adaptable, found in a wide variety of open habitats, from coastal beaches and mudflats to inland riverbanks and even agricultural fields.
