The Chaco Owl is a medium-sized, elusive owl species endemic to the dry and thorny Chaco region of South America. Its plumage provides excellent camouflage against the arid landscape.
Where to spot
Inhabits the dry forests and thorny scrublands of the Gran Chaco, covering parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and a small part of Brazil.
How to spot
Listen for its hooting calls after dark, which are a key identification feature. Spotting them in their dense, thorny habitat requires patience and often a spotlight.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. The best time to observe is during the night when they are active. Vocalizations are most frequent during the breeding season.
