Spotted
The Rufous-banded Owl is a large, striking owl found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. It is characterized by its rufous-brown plumage and prominent barring, providing excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests along the Andes, from Venezuela to Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, resonant hooting calls. Spotting can be challenging in dense forest; use a powerful spotlight to scan the canopy and mid-story for its large form.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Most active after sunset. Its vocalizations are typically the best way to detect it.

This owl's call is a series of deep, guttural hoots that can carry far through its dense montane forest habitat, often giving away its presence before it is seen.
