Found along coastal areas of Southeast Asia, from Bangladesh to Sumatra. Inhabits mangroves, tidal estuaries, and coastal mudflats.

Look for its large size and prominent red bill as it perches on mangrove roots or exposed branches near water. Its loud, grating calls are often heard across the estuaries. Watch for its powerful flights between perches.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during low tide when mudflats are exposed, providing foraging opportunities. Active during daylight hours.
