Spotted
The Moluccan Dwarf Kingfisher is a tiny, jewel-toned kingfisher endemic to the Moluccas, Indonesia. It displays a mosaic of deep blues, purples, and reds, making it one of the most vividly colored dwarf kingfishers.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Moluccas, Indonesia, primarily on the island of Halmahera. Inhabits lowland and hill forests, often near small streams or damp areas.
How to spot
Look for its minute form perching low in the dense forest understory. Patience is essential to catch a glimpse of this shy bird. Listen for its high-pitched, thin 'tseet' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Best observed in the early mornings and late afternoons.
Despite its striking coloration, this kingfisher is often difficult to spot in its dense forest habitat, as its colors blend surprisingly well with the dappled light and shadows of the undergrowth.
