Where to spot
Native to eastern Australia, but introduced to Tasmania, Western Australia, and New Zealand. Found in open woodlands, forests, suburban gardens, and parks.
How to spot
Listen for its unmistakable 'kook-kook-kook-kaa-kaa-kaa' call. Look for its large, stocky body and powerful bill perched on high branches, wires, or rooflines. It often sits patiently before swooping down on prey.
