The Laughing Kookaburra is an iconic Australian bird, renowned for its distinctive call resembling boisterous human laughter. It is a large, terrestrial kingfisher with brown and cream plumage.
Where to spot
Native to eastern Australia, but introduced to Tasmania, Western Australia, and New Zealand. Found in open woodlands, forests, suburban gardens, and parks.
How to spot
Listen for its unmistakable 'kook-kook-kook-kaa-kaa-kaa' call. Look for its large, stocky body and powerful bill perched on high branches, wires, or rooflines. It often sits patiently before swooping down on prey.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, with calls heard most prominently at dawn and dusk. Often seen perching conspicuously.
