Spotted
The Sacred Kingfisher is a broadly distributed species known for its iridescent blue-green upperparts and white underparts, often with a buff wash. It is an adaptable bird found in various coastal and inland habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and various Pacific islands. It inhabits coastal areas, mangroves, forests, woodlands, parks, and gardens, often near water but also in drier environments.
How to spot
Look for its vibrant plumage and listen for its sharp, often repeated, 'kek-kek-kek' calls. It commonly perches on exposed branches or posts, scanning for insects, crustaceans, or small vertebrates. Its white collar is a key identification feature.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. In temperate regions, it is a summer breeding visitor, migrating north for winter. In tropical areas, it is resident year-round.

Despite its name, there's no widely recognized 'sacred' connection in modern culture, though it might relate to indigenous beliefs or its striking appearance. It is highly migratory in parts of its range, undertaking long journeys between breeding and non-breeding grounds.
