Spotted
The Ringed Kingfisher is a large and robust species, characterized by its shaggy crest, slate-blue upperparts, and striking rufous underparts with a white collar. It is a powerful fish-eating kingfisher of the Americas.
Where to spot
Widespread across a vast range from southern Texas (USA) through Mexico and Central America to South America. It prefers large freshwater bodies such as rivers, lakes, and estuaries with suitable perches.
How to spot
Look for its large size and prominent rufous belly. Spot it perched on branches or wires overlooking water, often bobbing its head. Listen for its loud, deep rattling call, which is unmistakable.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often most visible in the early morning and late afternoon when fishing. It is a resident species, present year-round throughout most of its range.
