Spotted
The Brown Cuckoo-Dove is a slender, long-tailed pigeon native to eastern Australia, easily recognized by its warm brown plumage and mournful call. It is typically found in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests, often seen feeding on fruits.
Where to spot
Endemic to eastern Australia, ranging from Cape York Peninsula south to Victoria. Found in rainforests, wet sclerophyll forests, and adjacent woodlands, particularly near fruit-bearing trees.
How to spot
Look for its uniform brown coloration, long tail, and relatively small head. Listen for its distinctive, mournful, three-note 'coo-coo-coo' call, which is often repeated. Scan the mid to upper canopy of trees.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but more vocally apparent in the mornings and late afternoons. They can be seen foraging quietly among the tree canopy.

Its extremely long tail, which can account for nearly half its body length, helps with balance when foraging in dense tree foliage and serves as a key identifier during flight.
