How to spot
Scan coastal mudflats and saltmarshes during low tide. They often feed in large, cohesive flocks and are identifiable by their small size, dark plumage, and the small white patch on their neck.
When to spot
Best observed during autumn and spring migration periods, and throughout the winter in their temperate feeding grounds. They are rarely seen on their high Arctic breeding grounds.
