Spotted
The Bougainville Crow is a large, all-black crow species endemic to Bougainville Island and nearby smaller islands in Papua New Guinea. It is a common and conspicuous bird within its limited range.
Where to spot
Endemic to Bougainville Island and the nearby Shortland Islands within Papua New Guinea, inhabiting lowland and montane forests, as well as degraded areas.
How to spot
Look for a large, uniformly black crow with a strong bill. Listen for its loud, deep 'caw-caw' calls, which are typical crow vocalizations. It is generally widespread and noticeable in its range.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Often seen flying over forests or perched in prominent trees.
This crow is often mistaken for the much larger and extinct Solomon Islands Giant Crow (Corvus boreus), which was once found in the same region.
