Steller's Jay is a large, striking New World jay found in western North America and parts of Central America. It is known for its dark crest and vivid blue plumage.
Where to spot
Widespread in coniferous and mixed forests across western North America, from Alaska to California, and into Central America.
How to spot
Look for its dark head and crest contrasting with bright blue body and wings. Listen for its loud, harsh calls or its surprisingly varied array of mimicry. It is often bold and curious.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours. Often seen foraging, especially around bird feeders in inhabited areas.
