Spotted
A large, uniformly dark swift found across mountainous regions of the Americas, known for its powerful, rapid flight. It spends almost its entire life in the air, only landing to nest.
Where to spot
Breeds in mountainous regions, often near cliffs and waterfalls, from Alaska and Canada south through Central America to parts of South America. Winters in South America.
How to spot
Look for their distinctive, powerful flight and long, crescent-shaped wings high in the sky, especially near large cliffs, canyons, or waterfalls where they might nest. Listen for their high-pitched calls. Binoculars are essential for distant views.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring and summer in the northern hemisphere, specific to latitude), flying high above nesting sites or foraging areas. They are diurnal.

Black Swifts often nest behind or within the spray of waterfalls, providing a unique, damp, and predator-resistant environment for their young.
