Spotted
A small and rather poorly known swift endemic to New Guinea, also featuring the stiff tail spines characteristic of spinetails. It inhabits the island's diverse forest environments.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea (both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea). Typically found over lowland and hill forests, often near rivers or clearings.
How to spot
Look for a small, dark swift with a rapid, agile flight. Distinguishing it from other spinetails in New Guinea can be difficult without clear views of its tail structure or specific vocalizations.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its range. Most active during the day when foraging for insects, particularly in fair weather.
Very little is known about the breeding biology and specific habitat requirements of the New Guinea Spinetail due to its secretive nature and the remote, often inaccessible, habitats it occupies.
