The Double-banded Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles bicinctus', is an attractive species found in southern Africa, named for the distinct black and white bands across the male's breast. It prefers open woodlands, scrublands, and rocky areas.
Where to spot
Native to southern Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and Angola, preferring rocky areas, dry woodlands, and bushveld.
How to spot
Look for them in dry, rocky areas with scattered trees or shrubs. Listen for their distinctive, almost dove-like 'who-who-who' call. Males are easily identified by their breast bands.
When to spot
Most active at dusk and dawn, often arriving at water sources shortly after sunset. Observable year-round.
