Spotted
The Black-crowned Barwing is a newly described and rare species endemic to a specific region in central Vietnam. It is characterized by its distinctive black crown and barred wings, highlighting the ongoing discovery of biodiversity.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Kon Tum and Gia Lai provinces in central Vietnam. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, particularly rhododendron and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often repeated, hooting or whistling calls. Look for subtle movements in very dense foliage. Its black crown and barred wings, though often obscured, are key to identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Due to its restricted range and rarity, observation requires significant effort.
This species was only formally described in 2007, underscoring the rich and still-undiscovered biodiversity of the Annamite mountain range.
