Where to spot
Endemic to the Kon Tum and Gia Lai provinces in central Vietnam. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, particularly rhododendron and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often repeated, hooting or whistling calls. Look for subtle movements in very dense foliage. Its black crown and barred wings, though often obscured, are key to identification.

Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Due to its restricted range and rarity, observation requires significant effort.
