Found in mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, often in dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets, from low to mid-elevations.

Listen for its various chattering and whistling calls. Look for active groups moving through dense vegetation. Pay attention to the overall greyish tone and any subtle rufous or streaked patterns for identification.
