Spotted
The Giant Laughingthrush is, as its name suggests, one of the largest species within the laughingthrush family, with a robust build and brownish-grey plumage. It is a shy and elusive bird, preferring dense, high-altitude forests. This species is endemic to parts of the Himalayas.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas, including parts of northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and southeastern Tibet, as well as adjacent parts of China. It inhabits dense rhododendron and coniferous forests at high elevations, often near the treeline.
How to spot
Requires dedicated effort and often remote expeditions. Listen for its deep, resonant calls, which are often the only indication of its presence. Be patient and scan dense forest edges and clearings at high altitudes.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its montane habitat. Best opportunities for observation occur during the spring and summer when birds are more active, particularly in the early mornings.

Despite its large size, the Giant Laughingthrush is notoriously difficult to observe due to its preference for dense, remote habitats and its generally secretive behavior.
