Spotted
Henri's Laughingthrush is a distinctive and elusive babbler found in the high-altitude forests of southern China and northern Vietnam. It is characterized by its dark, mottled plumage and rufous undertail-coverts.
Where to spot
Found in mountainous regions of southern China (Yunnan, Guizhou) and northern Vietnam. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, particularly rhododendron and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its quiet, often repeated, whistled calls. Look for subtle movements in very dense undergrowth. Its overall dark, mottled appearance combined with rufous undertail-coverts are subtle but useful ID marks.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Can be hard to spot due to its secretive nature and dense habitat.
This species is named after Henri d'Orléans, a French prince and explorer, highlighting the historical contributions of naturalists in discovering Asian birdlife.
