The Black-gorgeted Laughingthrush is a distinctive babbler found in the montane forests of Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its prominent black throat patch ('gorget') and otherwise olive-brown plumage.
Where to spot
Found in mountainous regions of mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Inhabits dense undergrowth of montane evergreen forests and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, chattering calls. Look for groups of birds moving noisily through the undergrowth or on the forest floor. The prominent black throat patch is the most reliable identification mark.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small to medium-sized foraging parties.
