Found in mountainous regions of mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Inhabits dense undergrowth of montane evergreen forests and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, chattering calls. Look for groups of birds moving noisily through the undergrowth or on the forest floor. The prominent black throat patch is the most reliable identification mark.
