Widespread in the lowland and hill rainforests of New Guinea, from sea level up to about 1,200 meters, preferring the mid-story and sub-canopy.

Look for a small, generally dark (blackish) bird with a slender bill, moving actively through the foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, often repetitive calls.

Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Best chances for observation are in the early morning when birds are most active.
