Spotted
The Dwarf Berrypecker is a tiny and inconspicuous bird endemic to New Guinea, known for its small size and drab olive-green plumage. It is one of the smallest members of the Melanocharitidae family.
Where to spot
Endemic to the lowland and hill rainforests of New Guinea, typically found from sea level up to about 1,000 meters, preferring the forest understory and mid-story.
How to spot
Requires keen eyes and patience due to its tiny size. Look for a very small, dull olive-green bird actively moving through dense foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, very thin calls, which can be hard to hear.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours, but very difficult to spot due to its small size and cryptic plumage. Early mornings might offer the best chances.
Despite its name, its diet is not limited to berries; it also consumes small insects, which are often gleaned from foliage.
