Spotted
The Arfak Melanocharis is a small, elusive bird endemic to the Arfak Mountains of New Guinea. It is a member of the Melanocharitidae (Berrypecker) family, known for its generally drab plumage and insectivorous diet.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Arfak Mountains in the Bird's Head Peninsula of West Papua, Indonesia, inhabiting primary montane rainforests, usually at higher elevations.
How to spot
Requires visiting its specific, remote mountain habitat. Look for a small, dark, unobtrusive bird foraging in the forest understory. Its quiet calls are not well-documented, making detection challenging.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight, but very difficult to observe due to its rarity and preference for dense forest undergrowth. Early mornings might offer better chances.
This species is highly restricted in its range and known from very few specimens, making it one of the most poorly known birds of New Guinea.
