Spotted
The Large-billed Melanocharis is a relatively robust member of the Melanocharitidae family, endemic to the montane forests of New Guinea. It is distinguished by its noticeably stout and heavy bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane rainforests of New Guinea, typically found at mid to high elevations (around 1,000-2,800 meters), foraging in the mid-canopy and upper story.
How to spot
Look for a small to medium-sized, dull-colored bird with a proportionally large, heavy bill. It typically forages in the forest canopy. Listen for its somewhat buzzy or churring calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours, often seen moving through the canopy. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the most active times.
Its robust bill allows it to handle a wider variety of food items, including tougher fruits and larger insects, compared to its more slender-billed relatives.
