Spotted
The Western Pygmy Berrypecker is a tiny and elusive bird endemic to the western parts of New Guinea. It is one of the smallest and most unobtrusive members of the Melanocharitidae family.
Where to spot
Endemic to western New Guinea, primarily the Bird's Head and Onin Peninsulas, inhabiting lowland and hill forests, often near forest edges or clearings.
How to spot
Search for a very tiny, dull-colored bird gleaning insects from foliage. Patience is crucial, and listening for its very soft, high-pitched calls might be the best way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours, but its small size and dense habitat make it difficult to observe. Early mornings are best.
This species is often found in mixed-species foraging flocks, moving quickly through the forest canopy, making it challenging to get a clear view.
