A large, uniformly dusky grey cotinga with a distinctly darker, almost black belly, found in the humid montane forests of southeastern Brazil.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and forest edges in southeastern Brazil, primarily in the Atlantic Forest biome.
How to spot
Look in the mid-story and canopy of tall forests. Its dusky grey plumage with a darker belly is the key identification feature. Listen for its distinctive, loud, ringing whistles.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.
Despite its relatively somber plumage, it is known for its strong, whistled calls that carry well through the dense forest.
