Spotted
A rare and highly localized cotinga species, known only from a small region of southeastern Brazil. It is characterized by its uniform dusky-grey plumage.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and forest edges at higher elevations in southeastern Brazil, particularly in Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching within its limited range. Look for a plain, dusky-grey bird perched in the mid-story or canopy. Listen for its distinctive, loud, whistled calls, which are the primary way to detect it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Due to its rarity, any sighting is significant. Best sought during early mornings.
This species is considered vulnerable due to its extremely restricted range and ongoing habitat destruction in the Atlantic Forest.
