Spotted
Beck's Petrel is an extremely rare and recently described dark petrel, known from very few sightings in the Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Sea. It is critically endangered.
Where to spot
Known only from sightings in the Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Sea, Papua New Guinea. Its breeding grounds remain undiscovered.
How to spot
Identification is extremely challenging due to its rarity and similarity to other dark petrels. It is a medium-sized dark petrel with a slightly paler face. Requires considerable luck and dedicated pelagic expeditions in the remote waters off Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
When to spot
Sightings are highly opportunistic and incredibly rare, with no clear seasonal patterns due to lack of data.
This species was only formally described in 2012, based on just a handful of specimens collected decades earlier, underscoring how little is known about some deep-ocean seabirds.
