Elliot's Pitta is a beautifully colored, medium-sized pitta found in the humid tropical forests of Indochina. It sports a striking combination of blue, green, and rufous plumage, often with a pale belly.
Where to spot
Dense lowland and hill evergreen forests, often in areas with thick bamboo or rattan, in parts of Indochina, specifically Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, two-note whistling call. Walk slowly and quietly through its preferred habitat, pausing frequently to scan the undergrowth. A local guide can be invaluable for finding this shy species.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Best observed during the breeding season (often tied to the local rainy season) when males are most vocal. Active during dawn and dusk.
