The Sula Pitta is a beautiful, secretive pitta species characterized by a black head with a pale stripe, a blue back, and a vibrant red belly. It is endemic to the Sula Islands.
Where to spot
Primary and mature secondary lowland forests, often in dense undergrowth, on the Sula Islands (e.g., Taliabu, Mangole) east of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
How to spot
As with other pittas, listen for its distinctive, often repeated calls from the forest floor. Remain still and patient near areas with good leaf litter cover.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season. Active during daylight hours.
The Sula Pitta was formerly considered a subspecies of the Red-bellied Pitta but is now recognized as a distinct species based on plumage and genetic differences.
