Spotted
The Eared Pitta is a medium-sized, highly distinctive pitta with a brown and black streaked body, a prominent black head, and elongated 'ear tufts' on either side of its head.
Where to spot
Humid broadleaf forests and bamboo thickets, particularly in dense undergrowth, across mainland Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia).
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and distinctive whistled calls, which are the best way to locate this shy ground-dweller. Remain still and scan the leaf litter.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically April-July). Active during daylight hours.
The Eared Pitta's ear tufts are a unique feature among pittas, and it is also known for its habit of building dome-shaped nests on the ground.
