Spotted
A recently recognized antpitta species with a highly restricted distribution in the cloud forests of northern Peru. It is a secretive forest floor inhabitant, identified primarily by its calls.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very small area of humid montane cloud forest in northern Peru, specifically in the department of Amazonas, in the vicinity of the Atuén River.
How to spot
Listen for its distinct vocalizations, which are the primary means of detection. Observing it involves quiet, patient waiting in its specific cloud forest habitat, focusing on any movement on the forest floor.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the early morning, particularly at dawn. Active year-round within its restricted, high-elevation habitat.
Described in 2020 as part of the 'Rufous Antpitta' complex, this species is named after the Atuén River valley in its limited Peruvian range.
