Spotted
The Ascension Frigatebird is a large, dark seabird with an impressive wingspan, endemic to Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Males are entirely black with an inflatable red gular pouch, while females have white patches on their underparts.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on Boatswain Bird Island (a small islet off Ascension Island) and disperses in the tropical South Atlantic, primarily around Ascension.
How to spot
Observe from offshore boats or the coast of Ascension Island. Look for its huge wingspan, scissor-like tail, and aerial agility. Males display a striking red gular pouch during courtship. They often harass other seabirds to steal food.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round around Ascension Island. Breeding activity is continuous, with birds present at the colony throughout the year.
