Spotted
The Great Frigatebird is a large and powerful seabird of tropical oceans, renowned for its incredible aerial maneuverability and habit of stealing food from other birds. Males are all black with a striking red gular pouch.
Where to spot
Widespread across tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, with scattered colonies globally. Breeds on remote oceanic islands and often seen over open ocean and coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for its enormous wingspan (up to 2.3 meters), deeply forked tail (often held closed in a 'V'), and agile, acrobatic flight. Males are entirely black, while females have a white chest and throat and a reddish eye-ring. Watch for their characteristic pursuit of other seabirds.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in tropical waters. Breeding periods vary, but males with inflated red pouches are a common sight during courtship season.
