The Magnificent Frigatebird is a large, striking seabird of tropical waters, known for its aerial prowess and kleptoparasitic behavior. Males are entirely black with an impressive inflatable red gular pouch during courtship.
Where to spot
Widespread in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, eastern Pacific, and Caribbean. Breeds on remote oceanic islands and often seen soaring along coasts.
How to spot
Look for its massive wingspan, deeply forked tail, and graceful, effortless soaring flight. Males are all black with a bright red gular pouch. Females have a white chest and sometimes a red eye-ring. Often seen harassing other seabirds for food.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in tropical coastal areas. Breeding occurs during specific periods depending on the colony, with males displaying their pouches to attract mates.
