Spotted
The Orange-backed Woodpecker is a magnificent large woodpecker of Southeast Asia, distinguished by its vibrant orange-red back and prominent crest, contrasting with its black wings and white-streaked underparts. It is a visually stunning bird.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, swamp forests, and mature secondary growth in Southeast Asia, including parts of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java.
How to spot
Look for its large size and brilliant orange-red back and crest. Scan large tree trunks in dense forest. Listen for its loud, ringing calls and powerful drumming, which are characteristic sounds of the tropical forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its tropical habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more conspicuous in the mornings.
This impressive woodpecker often excavates very large nesting cavities in dead trees, which are subsequently used by a wide array of other forest animals once abandoned.
