Found in parts of West and Central Africa, including countries like Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Central African Republic. Inhabits savannas, woodlands, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its brown back and pale, sometimes streaked, underparts. Males have a red nape. Listen for its drumming and characteristic calls, which are often a series of high-pitched notes.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round. Mornings are often best for foraging and vocalizations.
This woodpecker is known for its strong excavating ability, creating robust nest holes that are often subsequently used by other cavity-nesting birds.
