The Yellow-faced Flameback is a distinctive woodpecker species recognized by its bright yellow face and crimson back. This colorful bird is a resident of tropical forests, often seen climbing and drumming on large trees.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, particularly found on the island of Negros and Panay, inhabiting lowland forests and occasionally more degraded areas.
How to spot
Focus on its bright yellow facial markings and the extent of red on its back (more prominent in males). Listen for its characteristic loud, rapid drumming and a series of sharp 'kek' calls.
When to spot
Active during the day, this species can be observed year-round within its range. Mornings are often the best time to hear its calls and observe foraging.
