Spotted
The national bird of Peru, this spectacular cotinga is famous for the male's brilliant red-orange plumage and prominent, fan-shaped crest. It is an unmistakable inhabitant of Andean cloud forests.
Where to spot
Humid montane cloud forests and rocky ravines in the Andes, from Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
How to spot
Find active leks, usually in remote forest areas near streams or cliffs. Listen for their loud, guttural calls. Males are unmissable with their bright crests; females are duller and brownish-orange.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed at active leks during the breeding season, primarily in the early morning.
