Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid lowland and foothill forests from Costa Rica to northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Locate army ant swarms and patiently wait for a view. Listen for its strong, ringing calls. The rufous flank patch is a key identifying mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon, especially near active army ant swarms.
This species is known to hop rapidly on the forest floor, often making short, sudden dashes to capture prey disturbed by ant swarms.
