Inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests, typically near streams and in seasonally flooded areas, across the Amazon basin.

Look for it hopping on the forest floor, especially near water. Listen for its distinctive, often rapid and whistled calls. The fine spotting on its back is a good field mark.
