Spotted
The Olive-backed Tanager (Chlorothraupis) is a widespread but subtly marked tanager of Andean forests, characterized by its overall olive-green plumage with a slightly darker back.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests of the eastern Andes, from southern Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia.
How to spot
Look in the understory and mid-story of humid montane forests, often near clearings or army ant swarms. They are often part of mixed-species flocks. Listen for their distinctive, slightly rough calls.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round in its range. Best seen in the morning.
This tanager is known to be a dedicated "ant-follower" when the opportunity arises, joining army ant swarms to catch insects that are flushed by the ants.
