Spotted
The Ultramarine Grosbeak is a stunning and popular bird across much of South America, with males exhibiting brilliant, deep ultramarine blue plumage. Females are a drab brown.
Where to spot
Widespread in various semi-open to open habitats with scattered trees and shrubs across eastern and central South America (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay).
How to spot
Look in open woodlands, forest edges, savannas, and gardens. Males often perch conspicuously. Listen for their loud, clear, and melodious song, a series of whistled phrases.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
This species is a common cage bird in some regions due to its beautiful plumage and melodious song, which unfortunately puts pressure on wild populations.
