The Blue Grosbeak is a relatively large and robust finch-like bird, with males displaying a deep, rich blue plumage, chestnut wing bars, and a large conical bill. Females are warm brown.
Where to spot
Breeds across the southern and eastern United States and northern Mexico. Winters from Mexico south through Central America to Panama, and locally in the Caribbean.
How to spot
Look in brushy areas, overgrown fields, forest edges, and riparian thickets. Males often perch on prominent branches or wires. Listen for their rich, warbling song and a distinctive "chink" call.
When to spot
Best seen during the breeding season (May-August) in its northern range, or during migration (April-May, September-October). Winter residents are present from October to April in their southern range.
